Basics of Good Care - Overview
Quality of Care: Getting the Basics of Good Health Care

The basics of good health care are defined by the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in a model called the “medical home”. A medical home is an approach to providing high-quality, cost-effective health care in which the primary care physician works in partnership with the family, other health care providers and community to ensure health care is accessible, family-centered, continuous, comprehensive, coordinated, compassionate, and culturally effective.1, 2 Historically, a medical home has been determined simply by the presence of a usual or primary source of care, such as a pediatrician or family physician. However, it is now a national health goal to assure that all children have a medical home using this expanded model for defining the basics of good health care for children and youth. Studies are beginning to document the association of having a medical home on improved outcomes of care for children.3 Factors which contribute to children not having a medical home include the availability of providers, provider reimbursement levels, as well as geographic, cultural, and language barriers.
