What’s in this chartbook? Unless otherwise noted, all the indicators included in this chartbook are from the National Survey of Children’s Health.1
The Demographics chapter presents a demographic overview with information on characteristics of the child population, family structure, income and education. Additional data on child demographics are available from the Florida Kids Count report.2
The Health Status chapter describes the overall health status of children including indicators of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, and causes of morbidity, including some health conditions amenable to prevention. Additional indicators of child health and wellbeing are available from the Florida Department of Health.3 The Insurance and Utilization chapter provides information about health insurance coverage as well as the utilization of outpatient and inpatient services. The insurance data is drawn from the 2004 Florida Health Insurance Survey.4 The utilization data come from hospital discharge data and Medicaid encounter (claims) data. Additional data on utilization, including information that is specific to health plans and hospitals, is available from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration.5
The next four chapters provide a comprehensive picture of the quality of healthcare for children and their families including preventive, acute and chronic illness care. The Basics of Good Care chapter includes information on whether children had a Medical Home as well as describing various dimensions of Medical Home such as care coordination and communication. The Healthy Development chapter provides information on children’s receipt of preventive medical and dental care. The Living with Illness section draws from the National Survey of Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs to provide an in-depth look at the types of care these children receive.6 The Getting Better section focuses on ambulatory and inpatient services for acute conditions and includes information on the safety of hospital care. The data for this section come from multiple sources including the National Survey of Children’s Health, Florida Medicaid encounter data and hospital discharge data in Florida and the Nation.
